Every generation got a different set of instructions about love. None of them came with a manual for what to do when the instructions stopped working.

The Silent Generation married young and stayed. Not always because the relationship was good, but because leaving was not a real option. Women could not get a credit card in their own name until 1974, no-fault divorce barely existed, and for Black Americans, legal marriage had only been federally protected since 1868. Interracial couples could not marry legally nationwide until 1967. Staying, for millions of people, was not a virtue. It was a locked door.

Then the doors opened. The women's movement, civil rights legislation, no-fault divorce laws, the birth control pill, and eventually marriage equality. Each decade handed more people the actual freedom to choose. Boomers were the first to divorce at scale, not because they loved less, but because they finally could. Gen X grew up in the wreckage of that wave and responded by marrying more carefully. Millennials got the self-help ethic, the 2008 financial crisis, and the smartphone. Dating became a catalog where commitment feels like closing a tab. Gen Z inherited all of it, plus the anxiety of growing up performing their lives online.

Each shift was progress. And each shift, without new relationship skills to replace the old structures, left a gap nobody filled. The result is where we are now.

What avoidance looks like across every generation

The behaviors look different by generation. The mechanism underneath is the same.

A Boomer leaving a 20-year marriage because they finally feel entitled to happiness, a Gen Xer who has been not ready for anything serious for a decade, a Millennial three months into a situationship who will not bring up the label, a Gen Z user who unmatches rather than respond to a message that got too real. These are not four different problems. They are four expressions of the same learned pattern: when closeness starts to feel risky, find the exit.

It almost never feels like fear from the inside. It feels like good judgment.

Something is off about this person. The timing is not right. I need to work on myself first. I have been hurt before and I am just being careful. These thoughts feel like self-awareness. And sometimes they are. But sometimes they are the brain running old protection on a situation that does not need it anymore. What was a reasonable defense at 14 keeps running at 40.

Each generation inherited these patterns and added its own layer. Boomers modeled that exits are survivable. Gen X absorbed that and became more cautious. Millennials took caution and amplified it with infinite optionality. Gen Z inherited all of it plus the anxiety of growing up performing life online. The result, across every generation, is the same: a very strong muscle for leaving and a significantly weaker one for staying.

We are not avoiding commitment because we do not want it. We are avoiding it because the cost of wanting it, and not getting it, has started to feel too high.

The data cuts across age groups. Hinge found that 56 percent of Gen Z users said fear of rejection caused them to stop pursuing a relationship. Gallup's 2024 research found that loneliness is not only a young person's problem. An estimated 52 million Americans across all age groups struggle with it daily. The Surgeon General declared it a public health epidemic in 2023. Single-person households in the U.S. have nearly doubled over 50 years and hit a record 38.5 million in 2024.

These are not generational statistics. They are the collective result of four generations each teaching the next one, through what they modeled, what they survived, and what they normalized, that protecting yourself matters more than risking connection.

What actually works

Understanding the problem is only useful if it changes what you do next. Here are four concrete shifts in how you approach dating, backed by what actually works.

Tool 1: Name the pattern before it drives

Notice when you are finding reasons to exit right as something gets real. That timing is data, not intuition.
Ask yourself: Am I leaving because something is genuinely wrong, or because getting closer feels unsafe? Those are different problems requiring different responses.
Keep a simple note on your phone. When the urge to pull back hits, write down what just happened right before it. Patterns become visible faster than you think.

Tool 2: Give it a real timeline

Research on the paradox of choice shows that artificial constraints actually improve decision satisfaction. Give a new connection 8 to 10 real dates before concluding it is not there. Attraction deepens with familiarity more than we expect.
Set a personal policy: before ending something with potential, name one specific thing you would want to be different. If you cannot name it, the exit might not be about them.
If you are in a situationship beyond 3 months, name it. Not dramatically, just directly. "I like what this is. I want to know if we are building something." The answer tells you everything.

Tool 3: Learn to repair, not retreat

Dr. John Gottman's research across more than 3,000 couples found that the number one predictor of lasting relationships is not compatibility. It is the ability to repair after conflict. Couples who repair quickly build trust. Couples who stonewall or exit erode it.
Repair does not mean solving the argument. It means reaching back toward the person. "I do not want to fight. Can we start over?" is a repair. "I went too far just now." is a repair. It can be clumsy. It works anyway.
Practice small repairs in low-stakes moments. The skill builds. When the big moments come, you will have something to reach for.

Tool 4: Recalibrate what "right" feels like

Research consistently shows that people raised in anxious or avoidant attachment patterns often experience secure, calm connection as boring. It does not have the adrenaline spike of push-pull dynamics, so it registers as flat. If it feels too easy, that might be what healthy actually feels like.
Ask yourself: Am I drawn to this person, or to the drama of pursuing them? Both feel like attraction from the inside.
Consistency, reliability, and showing up without games are not red flags. They are the foundation.

What this actually comes down to

Dating apps will tell you the problem is that you have not met the right person yet. The self-help industry will tell you the problem is that you have not healed enough. Neither is quite right.

The research points to something more specific: commitment functions like a skill. Most people across every living generation were never fully taught it. The Silent Generation had the structure but not always the tools to make relationships emotionally healthy. Boomers gained freedom but modeled exit as the solution to hard things. Gen X learned caution. Millennials and Gen Z inherited the whole stack, plus technology that turns every relationship into a low-commitment catalog.

Whether you are a Boomer who has been through two divorces and cannot figure out why it keeps going wrong at the same point, a Gen Xer who has been not ready for fifteen years, a Millennial watching another situationship quietly dissolve, or a Gen Z person who finds the whole thing overwhelming before it even starts. The pattern looks different on the surface. The root is the same.

Long-term relationships do not last because two people are perfectly matched. They last because both people learned how to stay in the room when staying is uncomfortable. How to reach back toward each other after a fight instead of going cold or going. How to choose the same person on a day they are annoying you. Gottman spent four decades watching couples and found that the ones who made it were not the ones who never argued. They were the ones who knew how to repair. Most of us were never taught that. So we do the only thing we know how to do: we leave.

Pew Research found that in 2023, for the first time in nearly two decades, the share of unpartnered adults in the U.S. actually declined. People are starting to recalculate. The situationship math is not adding up the way it was supposed to.

The good news is that attachment patterns change. The research on this is consistent across age groups. People shift how they relate when they have the right combination of awareness, practice, and support. A 60-year-old Boomer and a 24-year-old Gen Z are working with different histories but the same basic mechanics. The habits that created the distance can be looked at directly. They usually do not survive that kind of scrutiny for long.

But it does require actually looking at it. Which is harder than downloading a new app, staying in the situationship, or ending the thing before it gets too real.
