Yale researcher Dan Kahan found that higher intelligence does not protect against this. In politically charged contexts, analytical ability gets redirected toward defending conclusions already reached emotionally. Intelligence does not override the alarm. It serves it.

Moral Licensing for Aggression

Once the opponent is no longer fully human in the brain's processing, the psychological restraint against aggression loosens. Research on political violence identifies this as the consistent final step before conflict becomes physical.

Taking It Back

The Skills That Actually Work

Staying informed does not require staying activated. Caring about outcomes does not require living in threat mode. These are two entirely different states and the system benefits from you not distinguishing between them.

The Most Political Thing You Can Do Right Now

The system works best when you are reactive, tribal, and exhausted. A frightened voter, a furious viewer, a person who has stopped trusting anyone on the other side is exactly what the machinery is designed to produce.

Psychological literacy is the exit ramp. When you can name what is happening in your nervous system, identify the moral framework driving the person across from you, and recognize the mechanism being used to keep you both activated, you are no longer just a target. You are a participant with agency.

The grandparents who disagreed at the fence and still showed up at each other's funerals were not naive. They were practicing something the current system is specifically built to prevent. Reclaiming it is not sentimental. It is the work.
